Preparing the transfer of digital assets creates a paradox: relatives or designated people need to know that crypto assets exist and understand how to start recovery, but the document explaining the system should not itself become a complete copy of the keys needed to move the funds.
Good succession documentation describes the system and the access path. It does not need to contain the seed.
The first risk is leaving information that cannot be used
At one extreme, some setups leave almost no information: “I own Bitcoin, the seed is somewhere.” The secret may exist, but nobody knows which wallet it opens, whether a passphrase exists or how to verify that recovery worked.
At the other extreme, one file contains everything: seed, passphrase, PIN, storage locations and instructions. That document becomes a complete compromise point.
The objective is to create enough documentation to guide recovery without concentrating all signing authority inside a single file.
Document the inventory, not only the balances
The first useful layer is a technical inventory.
It may describe:
- which blockchains are used;
- which types of wallets exist;
- which devices or software are required;
- whether multisig is involved;
- whether a passphrase is used;
- whether assets are staked or deployed in protocols;
- whether exchange or centralized-service accounts exist;
- which people or roles are involved in recovery.
Exact balances are not always necessary in this document. The main goal is to prevent an asset or dependency from being forgotten.
Record that a secret exists without recording its value
Documentation can state:
- “a BIP-39 passphrase is used”;
- “seed backup is distributed across several locations”;
- “two of three signers are required”;
- “the multisig descriptor is stored separately.”
It does not need to include the passphrase, seed words or safe combination.
This separation informs the people responsible for continuity without giving the document, by itself, the ability to move funds.
Multisig requires more context
Multisig can work well in a continuity strategy, but it needs more documentation.
Recovery may depend on:
- the required signature threshold;
- cosigner public keys;
- the script or smart-contract type;
- derivation paths;
- descriptor or configuration file;
- cosigner ordering depending on the tooling.
Keeping only the seeds may not be sufficient if nobody knows how to reconstruct the corresponding multisig wallet.
Documentation should therefore separate signing secrets from the information needed to reconstruct the architecture.
XPUBs and watch-only data still affect privacy
An extended public key or watch-only descriptor normally cannot sign, but that does not mean it has no impact.
Depending on the wallet, this information can reveal transaction history, future addresses and the holder’s financial structure. Succession documentation should therefore consider confidentiality even when it contains no private key material.
The right question is not only “can this data steal the funds?” but also “what does it reveal about the estate?”
Describe locations without creating a complete treasure map
Storage can be documented in layers.
For example, the primary file may state that one recovery component is stored in a safe and another is held by a designated person, without immediately providing every detail needed to access both.
A second layer, available in the appropriate context, can contain the complementary information.
This reduces the chance that one lost or copied document is sufficient to reconstruct the entire setup.
Identify who can interpret the technical system
Succession difficulty is not only about access to the secret. It is also about avoiding mistakes during recovery.
Someone unfamiliar with wallets may confuse a network and a token, enter a seed into fraudulent software, use the wrong derivation path or move funds into a weaker setup.
Documentation can therefore identify a technical contact or assistance procedure without pre-emptively giving that third party the secrets.
GLOV Secure can provide non-custodial technical support: explain the architecture, help prepare procedures and, in the intended context, assist with understanding the setup without holding the assets.
GLOV SSS as a continuity building block
GLOV SSS can split a healthy seed into shards with a defined reconstruction threshold. This can reduce dependence on a single storage location.
It is not, by itself, a succession strategy. The relevant people still need to know:
- that the shards exist;
- how many are required;
- how they are brought together;
- how reconstruction is performed safely;
- what other information is needed to recover the wallet.
The cryptographic mechanism protects the secret; documentation gives meaning to the mechanism.
Test the process without exposing the main assets
A continuity process should be reviewed and exercised periodically.
The exercise does not need to reconstruct the real seed. It can verify that a designated person understands the inventory, can identify the devices, can locate required documents and knows the order of operations.
For complex architectures, a test environment or low-value wallet can validate the process without exposing the main estate.
Keep the documentation current
Succession documentation becomes dangerously misleading when it is outdated.
A wallet change, new passphrase, multisig migration, signer replacement or exchange-account closure should trigger an update.
A simple “last reviewed” date is surprisingly important.
Technical preparation must connect with the legal framework
A technical recovery process does not replace a will, estate planning or legal professionals where their involvement is appropriate.
GLOV Solutions does not provide legal, tax or estate-planning advice. GLOV is, however, in contact with notaries to facilitate, where relevant and subject to availability, the connection between technical security, asset transfer and an appropriate legal framework.
The purpose of a custody architecture is to make digital assets technically recoverable without exposing their secrets unnecessarily. To prepare this type of setup, contact GLOV.
